Sam Altman says OpenAI will not have an IPO in 2026

OpenAI (OPENAI) CEO Sam Altman stated that the company will not have an IPO this year because the timing is 'unwise.'

In an interview with Fortune, he said: 'Yes, we have a lot to do, such as addressing current demands for safety and alignment, and thinking about how industry and government can collaborate.'

He added: 'In fact, given everything happening in safety, now is not the right time to go public, and there is no pressure on us to do so.'

It is reported that Altman has urged his advisor team to set a target valuation of $1 trillion.

He noted that he has considered pausing new technology development to ensure safety and alignment.

Altman said: 'In order to fulfill our mission and the responsibilities it entails, we must be able to make decisions that obviously do not align with the interests of the company and shareholders.'

He added that OpenAI and other AI companies may be close to reaching an agreement to slow down development in response to safety risks.

He said: 'I won’t pre-announce private discussions that I think should be shared jointly at some point by all parties. But I do believe it will happen.'

The Fortune interview took place on Friday; one day later, Anthropic (ANTHRO) CEO Dario Amodei stated that the speed of AI capability improvement should be slowed.
